She traded the car in on a 1982 Prelude which was a very significant upgrade both from a cool factor, and reliability. \n\nOn their first anniversary, dad asked for a divorce and it became final on about their third anniversary. They are beautifully designed machines with extremely interesting design and engineering details, but they are also a dumpster fire of a car. I paid $500 for mine, and it was really not that far off from the one offered for sale here. I got it home okay, but just a few days later it spun a main bearing. After an absurd amount of effort and money, I sourced everything to do a simple rebuild of the motor. After finally getting the car back together, the brakes failed on the way out of the driveway. Weeks and weeks of sourcing parts and dollar after dollar went into replacing brake system parts. They never worked right again. Then the engine started having all sorts of issues. I could not seem to keep it running or driving consistently without something else breaking. In nearly a year with the car, and despite all the effort and money, I was never able to drive the car more than a few blocks at a time. You might assume I am a crappy mechanic, but I've completed several other projects of similar scope on other German and Italian vehicles without issue. Anyway, after stripping a few parts from it for eBay (which proved IMPOSSIBLE to sell; most were given away to contacts I had made or taken to the dump) it went to the junkyard. That's okay and can be entertaining, but rather than repeat, repeat, repeat we can go back to previous 100 LS posts for the full litany. As previous owners, both myself and @SwampyMeadows (my brother-in-law) have already told our stories.\n\nIn summary and hindsight; mine wasn't as unreliable as everyone else's seemed to be, parts prices were horrendous if you had to go to the dealer, some features were over-engineered and therefore unreliable and hard to work on (Inboard front brakes), the steering was a touch heavy for a lightweight like 104 pound wifey, they didn't like corn gas but I never encountered a car with a carburetor that did, the mufflers rotted out every two years, they handled and rode quite well for the era, the interior was a step above other imports, and they were very solid cars. Two over-riding plus factors at the time, both of which were important in getting a car for wifey, were that your choices for reasonably priced (i.e., used) front-wheel-drive automatics were limited and it still stands as THE BEST SNOW CAR we have ever had. Yes, all the current all-wheel-drive cars with electronic bells and whistles are probably quite good, but for ground clearance, suspension travel, and the ability to pound through heavy ruts and/or standing snow up to 18 inches deep nothing has bettered that old Audi. For those that experienced the Denver Christmas blizzard of 1982 (24 inches in 24 hours with drifting), I was driving the Audi before most 4X4s ventured out. With tall, skinny, studded snow tires on all four wheels, I drove the Audi to the hospital to coordinate rides provided by volunteer 4-wheelers for the medical staff. Like the old VW TV commercial about how does the snow plow driver get to work, that was the 100.\n\nI had never thought about it this way before, but the 100 LS was probably what a front-wheel-drive Mercedes would have been. None of the mechanics wanted to install brake pads on the inboard caliper cars. Yes, the air pollution systems were bypassed. Either it didn\u2019t work or the pieces had rusted out. Carburetors, CARBURETORS? Would you by an Audi without hesitation? We stocked most of the pieces of a Solex carburetor. Everything had to be precisely arranged so that the accelerator nozzle would squirt at an exact spot. When I worked at Holbert\u2019s in the early Nineties Larry Holbert came to me to order carburetor parts for his 90. I was the only one there who knew anything about that stuff! Various bits would go south in the trans or the diff and the whole thing would go south. Little bits of metal would get where they shouldn\u2019t be. The seats are (for the era) very comfortable. Progress was fairly smooth but by early afternoon with the engine finally apart and, I noticed, a lot of head scratching, it began to snow. Then the temperature plummeted even further in the non-heated garage. Then it REALLY started snowing. By nightfall there was nearly a foot of snow outside and we raced to get engine back together. Finally, well into the evening, with everyone's fingers numb from cold, we finally started the engine back up and since it was deemed to be leaking no worse than before Dad and I finally headed back across the James towards home. The little Audi's front wheel drive plowed through the snow without a hiccup (passing more than a few pickups and other supposedly snow going vehicles beached in a road side snow drift) and returned us safely back home to thaw out. Good thing we didn't need the brakes because the new head gasket really did nothing to keep oil from continuing to soak those ill-conceived inboard discs. After a couple more adventures like that Dad finally had enough and traded it in on a Volvo 240. Great car. It cost me a fortune to get someone to redo those inboard brakes and rotors, and it smoked a few values and that cost me another small fortune to fix in the deep south in 1977. I'm sure the first 40k miles were wonderful, but the happiest day was the day I sold it for what I paid for it after a year of repairs and frustration. I have grown since then and do appreciate how well this car has been treated and hope for a good price for the seller. Wifey had a similar recurring problem as her LS was an automatic and in those days there was no interlock that required putting it in park before removing the ignition key. Applying the parking brake is also a cosmetic thing for her; as long as the handle is pulled up slightly she's good, even if it's not engaging the brakes. As our driveway slopes back towards the street I tended to harp on the routine of putting it in park and setting the brake properly. More than once I came home to find the car in neutral and part way down the driveway as the brake started to cool and slip. One night I asked her if her friend was picking her up for exercise class to which she responded that there wasn't class that night. Then I told her that I only asked because there was a car in front of the house, maybe she could go check. I already knew that the Audi had made it all the way into the street and was sitting perpendicular to the traffic flow. When she came back in I just stood there and enjoyed the moment. It was one of the few times in the marriage that I was soooooo right, but I hadn't harped on it and she couldn't say anything about it. Stink eye and clenched teeth on her part! That's not an Audi horror story, could have been any car from the era.\n\nI must have had one of the Better 100 LSs as we never had most of the problems others have reported. One that hasn't come up was the transmission gear selector freezing up in sloppy winter weather. Possibly a Colorado freeze-thaw thing, I had the same problem with the parking brake cables on several GM products. On the Audi, five minutes of idling would thaw the transmission cable because it ran close to the exhaust pipe. But wifey snapped the solid end off the cable three times in her rush to get somewhere. The design flaw was that going from park to other positions pushed on the cable and the threaded end then kinked and snapped. If it had been pulling on the cable it wouldn't have broken. I was able to weld the cable end back on the first two times; the third time required a new cable.
