I remember working on one of these back in 1982 when they already seemed old. Apparently there was a problem with oil supply to the valve train, I'm guessing it was due to lack of oil changes. So rather than tear the engine down the owner took the oil pressure switch out and added a tee. He ran a small oil line up from the tee to the left valve cover, add a small shut off valve and drilled a hole in the valve cover, he could then regulate the amount of oil to drip on the rockers, just enough to not squeak, not so much as to lower the oil pressure. Saab invented the electric heated seat in 1972 and THIS car is one of the first vehicles to have this option as we know it.\r\n4. Records. Be careful about \"best on planet\" claim.\r\nHaving totally restored two of these 95s; I would hope that this car ends up in the care of a person that drives it; not wasting away in some collection ! \r\nI alway locked out the freewheel option (a throwback to the two stroke cars that could not accelerate over any long period of time so freewheeling relieved overheating etc problems; when Sabb went to four cycle V-4; buyers demanded free wheeling as gas conservation measure); saves tranny. V-4 motor is literally a 260 Ford Falcon cut in half and built for German Ford cars. Low milage and lack of use is not a plus as a lot of engine parts need heat and oil pressure to be useful\r\nEvery time I drove mine; I would get attention (one was same color as this one; other was black ) . My standard answer was \" It's a vintage Prius \". No surprise that this is an Alaska car as 96s and 95s are great snow cars ! Love the airport setting as that was Saabs \"real job\" (producing airplanes; fighter jets !); hence the \"aero\" design on the logo. Car is engineered like an airplane !\r\nNot a car to drive on the freeway; great around town ! Four on the tree is unique. Hydro clutch takes practice to bleed. Owner can do many repairs/maintenance themselves very easily ( cars were designed to anticipate this as Swedish buyers were far from shops); I think in these days of electronic everything ; this a blessing for a collector. Engine and tranny come out all in one lump; results in flat floor inside. These run especially well w Petronics ignition set up (point and matching coil). Very fun to drive and very practical as seats fold down (day camping !). Parts now very difficult to source; especially wagon ! Apply power when you are going the desired direction. Down shifting into a turn with a front wheel drive car overcomes the grip of the front wheels, but coasting into the turn removes the engine braking on the tires, giving more grip to changing direction. \r\nAlso a smooth functioning freewheel shows the car has a great gearbox and a careful driver.\r\nThe lower front valence always had terrible paint because they painted over the undercoating in that area. Dad really liked that heated seat in cold upstate New York winters! \nLots of comments about the free wheeling. Those of us who drove these cars when they were new enjoyed the free wheel as a semi-automatic in downshifts for city and country driving. But you definitely had to mind the takeup after coasting, if you didn't want to damage the gearbox. And engine braking was reassuring in the mountains with the free wheel locked out. Locking it out was risky with the 2-strokes, and unpleasant with their haphazard-feeling compression strokes. \nSaab knew some of its customers would want free wheeling in the V4, and even equipped the first few years of 99s with it. But other reasons Saab held onto free wheeling with the V4 were time and money. The V4 was actually rushed out as 2-stroke sales started seriously tanking in 1965 and 1966. A small group of employees went to the owners and said the president of the company, who'd rejected the idea of abandoning the 2-stroke engine, was endangering the business by not facing reality. They were right. With the blessing of the owners, the V4 model was secretly developed. It boosted sales tremendously. It used the Monte Carlo 850 gearbox, which had taller ratios. There was neither time nor money to strengthen the transmission. Saab did little to strengthen it until 1978 aside from adding a webbed case along the way. \nBest luck with the sale of this beauty.
