It wasn't... I saw lots of pictures, and it left me cold. It reminds me of a project by a builder who wanted to duplicate a WWII aircraft interior, without ever actually sitting in a WWII aircraft. Very much like the stuff that we used to do in fabrication and riveting class at A&P school. A bit too much, I think. \r\n\r\nI am a builder myself, and I could see how I could just unscrew the instrument panel, and replace it with a wood plank, covered in black vinyl, as would be original. I could put soft surfaces along the frame, cover the rest, and find a set of original seats. But then... \r\n\r\nThe under car pictures show strange parts added, such as the lower cross head braces, but without upper cross head braces (the ones that keep the front cross frame from twisting). In any case, the upper braces are cheap to purchase and easy to install. \r\n\r\nThe car was rewired, probably with a Chevy wire code. I happen to like the fuse box, but it could have been wired with Lucas coded wiring, so I could trouble shoot without a schematic. \r\n\r\nBut it looked pretty good. I liked the front valence, the front Konis and the roll bar. The cut down windshield was also pretty cool. I never put the top up, so it would not matter, but... I would like to have a full height windshield, just so that someone could use the top after my stewardship of the car ended. I am short, so the windshield height would work for me. \r\n\r\nThe invoices show a full front end rebuild, which is something that the next owner will never have to worry about and a lot of service taken care of. \r\n\r\nThis car does have a proper synchro 4 speed, but the tunnel is hard, the edges not rounded enough, and I bet it is a right knee bruiser, as the pedal boxes on Morgans are relatively narrow. Again, this could be corrected, which should be the theme of this particular Morgan.\r\n\r\nThe chassis still has the original single master cylinder brakes, which was something that I would have to improve, and the rear brake hose appears to be a bit close to the fuel tank (a problem of improper rear brake hose installation was found on my current +8, which caused a failure of the rear brakes. My car was equipped with a tandem master cylinder, so no total brake failure occurred). I never really thought about single circuit brakes, until I actually had a failure. In any case, a kit is available to convert the single master to a modern tandem master cylinder. \r\n\r\nThe exhaust has a fussy crossover and 18\" Magnaflow mufflers, which are likely LOUD. I have one of those on my other little 4 cylinder car, with a side exhaust, and it is barely a muffler at all. But, I love the side exhausts, and have installed such a system (with stainless steel, long tube headers) on my own +8, with an appreciable power increase. \r\n\r\nThis car is not really a traditional Morganists favorite brew (and past sales have borne this out). But, it does have some good points. \r\n \r\nThe Edelbrock intake and 4bbl are nice, and give a small power boost over the complex dual SUs, but there should be an isolator under that carburetor to facilitate hot starting. The cut down windshield gives it a nice look, and the synchro gearbox is nicer to shift, and a 5 speed can be installed for the project minded. The roll bar does stiffen the frame, but there is no scuttle hoop to finish the package. The Koni front dampers will never have to be replaced, and the king pins and bushings have been done. I really like the color, It might be nice with medium blue or midnight blue wings, if you are thinking about a color change. I would probably go with a dark blue or black interior with fully padded and covered seats. \r\n\r\nFor me, I really wanted a narrow track, Moss box car, for the look, and I finally found one, a year of searching later. While in nice condition, it would be a project. With the car, I also ordered tube rear shocks, camber plates for the front, a scuttle hoop for the chassis stiffening, along with, a conversion kit for twin master cylinder brakes. The car would be a project, leaving the bones of the Morgan I liked, while changing some other parts to make the car more, you know, mine. All those parts are reasonable in price and can be fitted to this Morgan as well. \r\n\r\nThis car might be a bargain, though, and could be a wonderful project for the next owner. Maybe you like riveted alloy everywhere, and if you don't, a little foam and vinyl can cure a lot of rivets and unadorned sheet metal. Paint can help, too. \r\n\r\nThis car has gone through a couple of owners recently, and probably has not been driven much. I am pretty sure why, and I am pretty sure that this car can be made into a long term ownership affair when acquired by a serious owner. Most of the basics are there, and the bones look pretty good, and in a Morgan +8, the bones are the most important part. \r\n\r\nI sometimes wonder what would have become of this car had I bought when it was first offered. Thought I\u2019d chime in as I am the one that commissioned this build. It should be noted that the intent of this build was (as seen on many 356s and 911s) to build a Morgan with attitude. A Plus 8 \u201cOutlaw\u201d if you will. This was a four year build by a shop in Southern California. This morgan was originally cream with blue fenders and blue interior. When purchased it was not drivable (safety wise) so a complete dismantle and build was commissioned. The engine was sent out for a complete rebuild (included new sleeves, low end build/balance and rebuilt heads ). It was also decided at that time to improve cooling, rebuild brakes, new clutch etc). \nRegarding the interior, once the body was completed the Morgan was sent to an aluminum fabricator to create a 1930s style interior with hand set riveting and aluminum seats. (The spare spark plugs in the rear were seen in various 1930s Bugatti\u2019s and Bentleys). \nRegarding the windshield: when I acquired the plus 8 it retained a taller windshield most likely from a 2+2. I never intended to use the top, side curtains and is why there aren\u2019t any snaps to use the top. Also the top will not fit over the roll bar. The intent was to only use brookland style folding type windshields. \nIt should be noted that the rims are the early plus 8 magnesium rims not later aluminum style. \nThe mufflers on the car sound fantastic. The exhaust did extend out to rear but I thought was too quiet for the look/ style so they were modified to exit to the sides. \nThe color was chosen as a similar color was seen on Other Morgan\u2019s specifically the Plus 8 GTR and the Plus 8 50 year anniversary edition.\nAs stated this Morgan was purposely built to be unique from others. It feels more like a Cobra than a Plus 8. Moss gearboxes are sensitive to the type of lubricant is used. Some will use hypoid rear oil while others will use 30W non-detergent oil or Redline MTL. I've used Delco 10-4014 synchromesh fluid for an incremental improvement over Redline MTL. The gearboxes generally are less prone to making graunchy noises once they're warmed up. When rebuilding these gearboxes, one has to choose between stiff and notchy/slow, yet effective, synchro action and easy and loose/quick, with less effective synchronizing action of the all-steel components.\r\n\r\nThe most effective upshift motion I have discovered with a Moss box is to do it in two steps. Pull the lever out of first gear, pass through the neutral gate and briefly hold a bit of pressure of the lever against 2nd gear in order to engage 2nd gear's synchro hub for a brief moment before pulling it home into 2nd gear. All of the soft surfaces have been replaced by hard alloy sheet, and the panel is, well... not very Morgan. \r\n\r\nIt does have the synchro 4 speed, which could be replaced with a 5 speed I imagine, but I think that the car went right to its proper pricing. I turned down this car at that price 4 years ago. I was able to hang on until I found an earlier car, which I paid more for, but at least it wasn't messed with as much as this one. The thing about restomods is that an older car is taken and made more modern, with modern styling cues, better brakes, modern engine. This Morgan has none of that. It has an interior that was someone's dream, yet no improvements in the chassis and no meaningful changes to the engine. It is probably in good shape mechanically, but still a +8, but with a goofy interior. \r\n\r\nIf you are looking for a Restomod Morgan, the Fink LS powered, 6 speed was a far better deal at $58K. It had an improved engine, brakes and chassis, along with it having some miles on it to prove the combination. \r\n\r\nGiven that this car might be worth say, $60K, as a properly prepared Morgn with an original interior, this one looks as though one could spend another $15K just to bring it around to a more valuable condition. Resto-mod Morgans are cool, but this one... Maybe not so much.This car has been for sale for the better part of 5 years. I imagine that it will be around a bit longer.
