Super excited for this one, much thanks to Bring a Trailer for all the work that was put into this listing and getting it live!\n\nI'll list out a brief history of this bike, back from when I purchased it: \n\n- I purchased this bike March of 2020 from a gentleman who had received it from his brother in law, who was the original owner. (He told me this, and the previous title was an old title from Idaho, from what I remember). \n\n- The bike had been repainted by the original owner in a sparkly but hideous 'bowling ball brown' (as I like to call it), as many of these old BSA's had been. So, I had the tank and side covers refinished by a local auto body shop back to the BSA Etruscan Bronze color. The paint was purchased from RS Bike Paints in the United Kingdom. The frame was left original and remains in the original Dove Grey color. \n\n- Maintenance and work performed during my ownership include: carburetor cleaning and adjustment (only thing required at the time to get the bike running again), tank acid wash and cleaning, petcock replacements, spark plug and wire leads replacement, headlight bulb and lens replaced (original one was cracked and is included with auction as well as a spare Taiwan-made Wassel lens), valve clearance adjustment, drive chain replacement, and new battery installation. The engine oil, primary oil, and transmission oil were changed. The bike has also received a set of brand new Dunlop K70 Gold Seal tires and inner tubes as well. \n\n- As you can see, the bike is in nice original condition for its age, with a beautiful looking refinished tank and side covers and original patina on the frame and engine. Original chrome also cleaned up very well - please see photographs and and walkaround videos for extensive details. \n\n-Original owners manual, tool kit, extra paint, a couple of BSA shop towels, headlight lenses, and odds and ends extras are included as shown in the photographs. \n\nThis bike has been an absolute blast to own and ride. Very fun to take to bike night and ride around town on, and it gets alot of compliments, including the 'vented' front drum brake (for some reason, alot of people notice that). I have also commuted on it to work 50 miles and back on a couple of occasions. \n\nPlease ask any questions that you may have and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. He said that this model is a 1971 manufacture carried over and titled as a 1972 model year. For 1971 manufactured bikes, that 'dove grey' was the original frame color, and then they moved over to black shortly after. It dragged its pipes a lot when agressively turning right, which made me want a '72 5 Speed Rocket 3. I had a 1972 that I bought in 1973 and rode it for many trouble-free miles over the next 3 years. The 71' and 72' A65s were (finally) fairly well developed with a number of improvements (in addition to the obvious changes to the frame and running gear) over the previous oil tank/dry frame BSA twins (although the 1970 models also benefitted from several of the engine improvements). The engines ran smoother, quieter, and were somewhat more oil tight. Unfortunately the new styling was not well received at the time and the paint jobs, on the 71's in particular, was seen as too busy, resulting in the solid colors for 72' (black frames and red tank and side covers for the Lightning and Bronze tank and covers for the T-Bolt). A 71' in original colors like this one is becoming rare to see. I owned a '72 BSA lightning and have to say that it was the very worst motorcycle that I have ever owned. I carefully rebuilt the engine, but the internals were so primitive an poorly made, that it's no wonder that the engine needed rebuilding at 17K miles. Poor design that was badly executed. \r\n\r\nThe conical hub front brakes simply don't stop the bike, but if you get caught in a rain storm, they are worse than worthless. When I finally sold my bike, I owned five gas tanks because they are so prone to crack at the seams. On a positive note, I learned how to braze weld gas tanks thanks to my '72 BSA. \r\n\r\nBSA went belly up in 1971. The '72 models were constructed with left over parts. The A 65 engine was a very primitive design that hadn't been improved for years. \r\n\r\nI purchased a BMW R75 back when I was restoring my BSA to have something to ride until the BSA got on the road. 26 years later, I still have the BMW, but the BSA was sold long ago. I had thousands of dollars and many hours in the BSA and sold it for peanuts. Many people resorted to using the \"side\" stand when kick starting the bike, and the side stand mount on the thin wall tubing broke, which now carried the oil inside. I like to tease the English about taking a perfectly good language and destroying it with goofy spelling and terms, but they hit it \"spot on\" in the case of calling the \"side stand\" a \"PROP stand\", designed ONLY for holding the bike up at rest, and NOT for jumping up and down to start the engine. This bike looks very good, and the new buyer should have no problems. The only other issue was that the sides of the gas tank tended to flex more than any other year, resulting in a leak at the seams. There is no sign of leaks on this bike. If it has not had a tank seal coating added inside, then it would be wise to do so as a preventative measure. Styling is an acquired taste, but 1971 chic is coming back after 50 years. Add half an inch to the length of the front brake actuating arms for more leverage, and almost no one will even notice. Dick Mann received a free new street bike a year for a while from Triumph/BSA, and he taught me that trick. It definitely takes some effort to get that bike onto the center stand - not sure how much of that is attributed to the stand requiring a bit of adjustment, and how much of that is natural. That's funny that BSA properly called it a 'prop' stand for the side stand. Personally, I never kick start any of my motorcycles on the center stand OR the side stand, as I find that doing that over time tends to tweak and wear on them, and/or can lead to damage if done too hard. If I can't get any of my bikes to start while sitting on the seat or simply standing off the the right when holding them upright, then it means that it doesn't start well enough for me and I usually do some tuning. (In the videos on this, I had the bike on the center stand since the camera was running and it was in frame). It makes me cringe when I see guys standing a bike onto the side stand and then loading all of their weight onto the kick starter over and over. \n\nThis tank has not been lined, only acid washed and neutralized. (It wasn't that rusty inside to begin with but being that I couldn't see the bottom, I did it for safe measure). It has had ethanol free fuel in it since cleaning. \n\nPersonally, I don't much care for aftermarket tank coatings or liners, as they tend to peal and flake over the years, and then clog up the petcock. I have seen this on so many old bikes that I've owned and had liners added by the PO. I know that some have found better coatings than the 'Kreme' system, but I always opt for leaving it clean after washing it out. You are correct with this tank, it has not showed any signs of leakage at all, both before and after having it refinished. \n\nThat is an interesting idea for increasing the lengths of the brake actuating arms, thanks for sharing! It could definitely help add some stopping power on these models. It is a very forgiving bike to ride and I taught my son to ride on it. With decent modern tires the bike's handling improves significantly over the old Dunlops. I have the Bridgestone Accolade tires on mine which look like the dunlops but are much better. A Boyer Brandsen electronic ignition unit makes the bike very reliable. Our Britalia Motors business is now parts only on line, and we are currently clearing the old GP Motors inventory from the San Francisco bay area, which includes used grab rails from $20, but not for this model. The angle of the rear grab rail slopes further back to accommodate the longer rear seat of the 1971-1972 BSA Triumph 650 bikes, but the built-in reflector tabs make it easy to identify. Believe it or not, after WWII and up until the early 60s, BSA was the most popular motorcycle in the world!\r\n\r\nBuy this bike, join the BSA Owner's Club, and you'll be connected to enthusiasts across the country and the globe as well. Parts are readily available (if you know where to get them and if you're in the club you're well connected) and surprisingly inexpensive! It's far cheaper to restore a 1972 BSA Lightning than a 1972 Honda 750!\r\n\r\nThese machines are very elemental, simple, and respond to your inputs in a very linear fashion. You become part of the machine and it's a highly mechanical experience you do not get from more complex motorcycles. Plus, if something does break on the road, you can usually get it running again with a few basic tools in your kit long before your buddy on his broken Honda can have AAA pick him up!\r\n\r\nThis looks like a very solid, honest and fine example to me.
