This was before Graham Nearn of Caterham bought the rights to the Seven. \r\n\r\nThis looks like an honest car that needs to be driven at least weekly most of the year. The seller says \u201cIntermittent electrical issues are also described.\u201d Of course they are! It is a Lotus with fragile grounds that need to be cleaned. Sorry, I couldn\u2019t resist. The problem you will have is where to put your left foot. There is no room so you drive with your leg bent and hope\r\nyou are not riding the clutch. This isn\u2019t a great car for long road trips but it is very fast and very fun. (fast being top speed of 85 or 95mph) It gets there very quickly. I\u2019ve fixed multiple wiring problems including horn, turn signal and left rear brake lights. As I fix one a new thing pops up.It\u2019s cramped under the dash and the dash lights are wired in series I think. If I were going to keep the car I would make a new wiring harness and start over. The transmission is mostly how a 1970\u2019s transmission works. I have no idea what a rebuild would cost and I\u2019m not sure it would help. If I concentrate on my down shift I can do it every time but if I\u2019m sliding sideways and the curve keeps getting tighter sometimes I just can\u2019t think about shift positions. I love that motor. Interesting observation, if you look close you can see the cam cover has a boss on far end of the intake side. This motor was build on the Europa line but pulled and used for the Seven before final finishing. You can see they did not drill out the boss for the longer intake cam that the Europa uses to drive its alternator (my motor is the same). Not only was it intended for the Europa but a domestic Europa (not US) as it has the Webber head as well as the Dellorto carbs. This motor looks like the exact same specification as the one that\u2019s in my car. \r\nIts much like any other motors as far as what to look out for. \r\nA few key things - its always good to keep the alternator/generator belt on the loose side. Having it to tight puts extra pressure on the water pump bearings. Replacing the water pump is a major job on this motor as it requires you to take off the head. \r\nValve adjustments are done by taking out the cams and using shims above each valve (not hard but a bit of a pain). Red line lead substitute is recommended if the head has not been converted for unleaded gas (mine has not). Modern day good quality oil is a God send for these motors I use synthetic and have had no problems. Yes it is, but as he has a chain, you would have to break the chain to have it come into play. Valves shims are very easy to do. You can do it without removing the chain or changing the timing. But I take the chain off anyways. Once you do that a few times it is really simple. The SN is LBS4- 4 digit number. The Number plate on the listed car is unusual as it does not follow the Lotus numbering format. One thing to note on the S4 is hidden chassis rot. The areas between the fiberglass tub and steel frame and steel skins collect dirt and moisture and tend to rust out prematurely. Many of the S4 cars I have seen, including mine have had the steel skins replaced and lower chassis tubes repaired or replaced.This is to be expected with these cars. Just something to keep in mind. I hope this car finds a good home.
