A friend of mine was a Ford factory rep and had an early small window hatchback that he special ordered. Within a year the back window broke, and it took forever to get a replacement even though he was as close to the source as any mere mortal could get. When they were finally available, he bought a second rear window just in case. He knew there were so few small window hatchbacks that they'd never make more. Of course, if you have a spare, you'll never need it - and he didn't. The fix after that would be to put in a big window hatch, a straight swap. He and his wife used the car for autocrossing, rather common at the time. With a few suspension mods they were quite good in the production classes (no engine mods allowed), much to the chagrin of the less skilled BMW and Alfa drivers. If you weren't restricted on engine mods, the Racer Walsh catalog was a must have. A regular FTD contender in our area was a street driven turbocharged Pinto 2000 on race tires. I also saw a few run in the IMSA TA series, but they didn't seem to do as well there. \r\n\r\nThe sign writing on this one is cool because it's hand painted. None of those sissy-fied stickers! It was probably good advertising for Mr. Roach's shop. And you have to love the picture of Harold doing parade laps in the real racer with one kid sitting on the windowsill and another one in his lap. I could see doing the local show circuit and cruise nights with this one. GLWTA!\r\n\r\nSaved the jokes for the end. In the late 70s I was in heavy stop and go traffic and noticed a bumper sticker on the Pinto in front of me: \"Not So Close - Pintos Blow Up\". Without thinking I left a little more space the next time we stopped. And who remembers the late 70s SNL Weekend Update with the announcement that the US Army had a new secret weapon - Leon Spinks in a Pinto! To help the younger folks here that have figured out the Pinto had a nasty reputation, so did Leon. \"A month after he had won the (World Heavyweight) title (over Muhammed Ali), Spinks was arrested in St. Louis for driving the wrong way on a one-way street without a license. In June of `78, he was arrested in North Carolina for driving without a license and 26 hours later for speeding. In October, he was involved in an accident in his 2-day-old Corvette in Ohio, and a week later he ran it through a fence. He raced four-cylinder Ford Pintos at Lanier National Speedway, Peach State Speedway, Anderson Speedway, and won numerous championships. He also ran skeeters in the National Vintage Racing Association of Georgia.\r\n\r\nHe and his father built the motors and cars. His sister got us in touch with Harold\u2019s ex-wife, who provided the vintage photos of the race cars. She told us that he found this car for sale, a particularly nice little low-mile Pinto, and decided to make a daily driver out of it. They \u201clettered it with the same advertising to exactly match our race car\u201d. It was both a rolling billboard and one of his main vehicles for years. \r\n\r\nHis father passed away in May of 2014, and Harold in October of 2014 at the age of 51.
