This one being offered the most beautiful I have ever seen and is the one to have, the 5 spd being the superior transmission. I\u2019m pretty sure this is a 72 model year Rocket because all the 71\u2019s had dove gray frames and black decaled rocket 3 side covers. This has the 72 chrome Rocket 3 emblamed side covers. I think I remember this color on the 72\u2019s, but someone with a 72 sales brochure can possibly verify that. The year mixup can be explained by some states titleing foreign bikes and cars by the year they were sold rather than their model year. This is no doubt a 72 model year manufactured and sold in late 71. Swapping out for a 5 speed is a not uncommon mod with triples and Triumph 650 twins.\n@lazyeye6 and @Billthedreamer I believe you both are referring to the 400 A75V (factory 5 speed) homologation models (200 in 1971 and 200 in 1972), although the 4 speed MkII Rocket 3's probably run second to them in terms of values among production triples. Of course, both models are BSA's, not Triumphs.\n@bringatrailer What do you mean by describing the rear brake as \"an external version?\" Btw, nearly all m/c drum brakes are integrated with the wheel hub, like those on this bike. It'd be easier to mention it only when they aren't.\nThis listing represents the bike as having 2k miles. That may be so, but I seriously doubt all the paint and chrome is original. Check the chrome worn to bare metal on the end of the kickstart lever (pic 72),and compare it to the rest. The seat has either been recovered or replaced, since it is not exact to either the 1971 or 72 profile. It sports 1972 paint although it's listed as a 1971 model. Factory lit shows the purple tank 1972 model had a black wrinkle finish on the front brake backing plate.\nI remember reading a contemporary road test that said if Mick Jagger rode a bike, it'd be this one. The chunky, Ogle-designed original was polarizing, to say the least. The similarly boxy Triumph Trident was \"fixed\" by dealers by means of a \"Beauty Kit\" which incorporated a Bonneville-style tank and silencers. BSA never offered the same for the A75R, but after enough buyer resistance in the showrooms, they completely redesigned the machine to be consistent with the style of the entire BSA range. And the purists and traditionalists howled at that, too.\n\nThe new design for '71 had a lighter, almost spindly look about it, and while having lots of 'bling', was nowhere near as much an integrated design as was the quirky original. Parts seemed to be bolted onto the machine, not designed to flow with or relate to one another. The oddly-shaped painted area on the chrome tank never seemed to make sense to me from a design standpoint, as more successfully done with the previous models.\n\nI purchased my '69 Rocket 3 about 41 years ago and am its second owner. It sat on the dealer's floor for two years before finding its first owner, finally being registered in 1971. My appreciation for its design has never faded, even though its all-original paint and plating has. I still ride it on occasion, and hard.\n\nAnd in subsequent years, my appreciation for the '71-and-later Rocket 3 has grown. From a historical perspective, it was BSA's last-gasp effort to fend off the challenge from the Orient and to stay afloat. A hurried and muddled design was cobbled together and even the Dove Gray frame was quickly seen as a design blunder and corrected the next year. \n\nAlas, although an excellent machine on almost every level, 4 speeds couldn't compete with 5 (although updated before the end); drums brakes couldn't compete with a disc; kickstarting couldn't compete with electric; vertically-split crankcases couldn't compete with leak-free horizontally split...and the Honda 750 ate the BSA's lunch.\n\nThis is a beautiful, seemingly original example, and the repaint was done quite well. This motorcycle left the factory on June 11th 1971 headed for Los Angeles and with a 4 speed transmission. It would have had a Dove Grey frame and ancillaries and been painted Firecracker red or Flambuoyant red. The VIN prefix would have been either A75RV or A75V if it had a 5 speed transmission. There were over 200 1972 R3s but only three left the factory with 5 speed transmissions. This one is painted in 1972 livery. A lot of Dealers at the time painted the frames black to try and up the appeal and move units. I've seen a couple that were brush painted without any disassembly. The side cover emblems are 1969/70 ones that have been trimmed to fit. Originally it had \"ROCKET THREE\" decals.\r\nLooks like a very nice original bike otherwise and not an auction queen. I would not criticise for the colour change which is my favourite by far.
