Unfortunately there is only so much room in the barn and we have several new arrivals coming later this month.\r\n\r\nWhile this one was loved and enjoyed enthusiastically, it was rarely used covering less than 2K kilometers during our years of ownership.\r\n\r\nBut what endless miles of nothing but smiles, as it was just a doll, that never once let us down.\r\n\r\nLike all good things, there comes in time an end and this is one of the very last block of serial numbers allotted by FIAT to the final month of production before production came to a close.\r\n\r\nI have heard endless stories of the assembly line workers crying each time a bucked-up tub came off the hook onto the line for final assembly as they all knew the knew each new batch of follow-on vehicles would be built and completed in FIAT's all-new, assembly line process, rather than the formal team member approach. The old crews assembly approach day's were over and with them gone and as such, out with the old and in with the new...\r\n\r\nThe 600's continued being built elsewhere outside of Italy well into the late 1970s but always under license and by most accounts under questionable builds... I had years ago a Spanish built example and while carrying the \"silhouette\" of the originals, it was only a passing resemblance, as panel fit was at best, close and handling and braking, grossly lacking.\r\n\r\nThe real charm of the late, FIAT built examples was pure-perfection on dialing in all that was good and dialing-out all that was bad. The car is located at our family home on the New Hampshire seacoast with easy access to the 95 highway. If you don\u2019t have my contact details, they can always be found in the description of our YouTube videos but the easiest way to reach me is to use the \u201cCONTACT SELLER\u201d button at the top right of this page.\r\n\r\nNo doubt engine performance @fiatguy is limited, what the Italian\u2019s called \u201csufficient but no more.\u201d Top speed is just shy of 70mph and getting there is leisurely at best. The Italian way of driving all of the FIAT 500 and 600 derivatives was the \u201cmomentum\u201d method. In other words, get the car up to speed and stay off the brakes as much as possible and let momentum carry you along.\r\n\r\nSo the running joke was this one originally had a sundial on the dash to measure acceleration times but we upgraded it to a grandfather clock. In other words, nothing happens fast and it is clearly about the adventure of the journey and not how quickly you can get there.\r\n\r\nI have had an endless amount of FIAT 500 and 600s over the years. Critical to getting optimum performance out of them is having clean plugs with proper gap, spot on ignition timing, and proper valve adjustment. The good news is they are easy to dial in and stay that way forever with nothing needed in-between other than fluid changes. I have never had one ever fall out time or needed a second valve lash adjustment after being properly set.\r\n\r\nI run this one on 91 octane pump gas and use a couple of ounces of Marvel Mystery oil into the fuel tank every time I gas up. The fuel gauge failed on me recently and I bought a replacement sending unit on eBay and installed it early this past week. Otherwise, all the lights and gauges work perfectly. There is a clever blue indicator light to let you know when you are in reverse but it only lights up if you hold the lever all the way in reverse. (Watch the YouTube video to see this.) All gear engagements are issueless and synchros on the gearbox are in great shape. They can be defeated if you try and speed shift but if you are doing that you deserve to end up with worn synchros as the cars were never designed for that.\r\n\r\nI tried to make sure there were good photos showing all the car\u2019s small scars and blemishes from the miles and years of regular use. These can be seen in photo gallery, photos number 31-33, 36, 38-39, 40 and 44. The worst area of the car can be seen in photo 39. I believe at some point the car was jacked on the rocker area just ahead of the right rear wheel arch and the body was damaged here and not very well repaired.\r\n\r\nThe car originally had four aftermarket wheel are chrome trim pieces but the two on the left side have been removed and the rubbery residue that mounted them is all that is left. I had planned on removing the two on the right side but never bothered to do this.\r\n\r\nThere is no rust on the floors and the bottoms of the doors are totally corrosion free. These are the two areas that rust the most but we of course never used the car except in fair weather and stored it during the winter. Wipers do however work perfectly as does both the heat and defroster and the hand throttle is also working perfectly. The car runs ultra-cool and never overheats. I use the hand throttle and choke on start ups or you can just use your foot and right hand on the choke and start the car with the key using your left hand through the steering wheel. (See the YouTube video of this method of starting.)\r\n\r\nThe floorboard area on the drivers side as seen in photos 104-106 has been repaired. I initially thought this was a rust repair but my mechanic looked at it closely while the car was in the air and said it looks like it was damage from a puncture as if the car ran over something as there is no rust present, just a clean patch to repair the damage on the flat section.\r\n\r\nWhen I first got this FIAT, the bakes were badly worn and I installed a set of linings I had on the shelf not realizing they were for a modified racing FIAT 600 I used to have, so this one stops on a dime and the first time you drive it, you should gently apply the brakes to get an idea of how little pedal movement it takes to bring the car quickly to a stop. They are far from stock and will quickly bring you to a standstill uniformly and safely.\r\n\r\nI installed a set of seatbelts front and rear. The rears are still there but now tucked behind the seats. I removed the fronts as we really never used them and they were just strapped under the seat rails and not really properly mounted. They do however come with the car.\r\n\r\nBaT is listing this FIAT on my transferable registration however when I registered the car, I was given the option of keeping my California title in my name and did so. Legally, BaT had to list the car as being sold on the registration only but I will happily provide a bill of sale as well and sign over the California title if the next owner would like it.\r\n\r\nI also still have the original California plates as well as my current New Hampshire plates and the set of year of manufacture plates from 1969 as shown in photo number 173. All of these will go with the vehicle.\r\n\r\nYes, that is correct, this FIAT was in the last block of those manufactured in Italy in the final months of production. It has as such all of the late features. Production continued in Spain, Poland, Yugoslavia and likely a few others but this is from the very last batch of Italian manufactured models and a bit special as such.\r\n\r\nThe second round mirror on the right of the car was there when I got it and I have left it in place. The car had a radio installed at some point but it is not there, just a small shelf with a Blaupunkt speaker. There is a rubber plug where the antenna must have been.\r\n\r\nThe car uses French \u201cCarello 700\u201d main driving lights and \u201cOSCAR 03\u201d Cibie rally lights. I added the OSCARs because they just looked so cool and are so much fun on night runs.\r\n\r\nAll five tires are band new and now have about ten miles running time since installation earlier this week and the short test drive from earlier today. \r\n\r\nSince I started writing this comment, I have another inspection and test-diver request for later today.\r\n\r\nEngine compression is 120 to 121psi on all four cylinders, leak downs are all 6 to 7% per cylinder. A very tight motor to say the least and no leaks anywhere. But FLOGGED might be a good one too!", "likes": 2, "timestamp": 1689176683, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 11911788, "authorName": "Bill_Noon (The Seller)", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/bill_noon/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "A couple of quick updates,\r\n\r\nFirst many thanks to Mike and Molly for taking the time and patience to drive all the way down from Nova Scotia and stopping by on their way to Cape Cod for a holiday.\r\n\r\nThey too have a late FIAT 600 back home and wanted some tips on how to operate the heat and defroster. \r\n\r\nThe earliest of the 600 models back when first introduced had marginal heating but by the end of the line this was dramatically updated so that even on the coldest days, cabin heat is more than sufficient with no fans needed.\r\n\r\nA lever just in front of the rear seats can be positioned fully closed to fully open in a roughly 90 degree sweep. There is a lever under the dash that divers warm air through a pull lever. All the way in will divert heat though two tubes to the base of the windscreen for defrosting and upper heat.\r\n\r\nAll the way out puts full heat on both passengers feet. You can also move the lever to any combination to control how much warm air is diverted up or down.\r\n\r\nThe second photo shows the very handy hand throttle. While you are not supposed to use this as a speed control, if I am on a flat out section of road, it works quite well.\r\n\r\nIt is really there to assist on start ups. You pull it out about 1/2 inch and use the choke lever during start ups. After a minute or so, release the choke lever and after a few more minutes, put the hand throttle lever all the way in.\r\n\r\nPaul,\r\n\r\nHere is the requested photo of the carburetor. It is not a twin-choke but a regular single choke unit.\r\n\r\nIt is a standard FIAT 600D item and it is a Bressel 28 ICP 10. They are a dime a dozen and available on eBay and numerous other places. Rebuilt ones start at about $100. Rebuild kits are $15 up to about $30.\r\n\r\nThe one on this car is absolutely dialed in and perfect for sea level normal driving. You will need to have your mechanic change jets for higher altitude in Denver.\r\n\r\nToday's fun ride and inspections were the last I have planned for.
