Only about 440 (give or take...) of the early narrow body cars were built, and this one is definitely NOT a narrow car, as the front wings are quite a bit wider than my own '69 (chassis in the low 100s). \r\n\r\nAlso, there is that larger bell housing and the synchro gearbox indicating a later, wider body model. \r\n\r\nIt's a nice car. If you like the non standard seats, alloy dash, and the other changes, go for it.\r\n\r\nI had looked at this car prior to purchase of my own '69, but I really wanted the early car and narrow bodywork, in original form. \r\n\r\nThe work on this car has been pretty comprehensive, and a whole lot of money has been spent on straightening it out. But, it will likely need more sorting once someone starts actually driving it. \r\n\r\nI don't think that any serious bidder will care about any special protection on the bare alloy panels, and no one will care much about the top and the cut down windshield. I drove mine with the top on only once (to hear any funny noises during the pre purchase test drive) and found it uncomfortable, and hard to see out of. Upon taking possession of the car, the top came off, the tonneau went on, and I drove it home. The top is off and properly stored, and will likely never be fitted for a drive during my ownership. Hell, I want to get rid of the windshield for a pair of Brooklands screens, but that's just me. \r\n\r\nI would not exactly call it a \"resto mod\", as it still has the original suspension. Not even tube shocks in the back, or a Panhard rod. Pretty much as it left the factory, chassis wise. \r\n\r\nIt does have an unusual cross head reinforcement (the \"track rod\" under the front suspension). The standard type of brace (after market, which the factory adopted as standard) goes from the frame to the top of the pillar (where it is far more effective at preventing any cross frame twist under braking. These are inexpensive and easy to install. They are quite effective, especially under braking, greatly enhancing stability and control. \r\n\r\nMorgans are really fun cars, and have a good history for appreciation. They are simple and easy to work on, with lots of support and parts available. This one is a little different, but it could be brought back without too much trouble. \r\nAlso, weighing less than 2000 lbs dripping wet, they are quite quick with the V8. I believe the these stickers for Morgans are again available. I know that there was a request to see the one on my \"70\" (really a '69 that was registered after September, making it a '70...) by the local DMV (an unneeded formality as the car had aged out of emissions requirements). Many of these cars were restored to some extent (after all, they are now near 50 years old), and the stickers are long gone. This is not really a problem, as most places will register the cars regardless. The problem in CA happens when the car is '75 and later. Then, they are subject to emissions testing. \r\n \r\nThe car here seems to have been imported to Germany, initially, from the VIN plate, and eventually made it to the US. \r\n\r\nIn any case, it is being mis represented as far as model year. I don't understand why, other than a '68 is worth about $20K more than a '74... Or it is a '75, and they are trying to skirt emissions in CA. Whatever... Its is obvious to any Morgan fan that this is a later +8, and not one of the original, narrow body, Moss gearbox cars. \r\n\r\nNone of the unusual cosmetics are so bad that the can't be fixed with a screwdriver and an open end wrench, maybe a plank of wood, if that is your thing. \r\n\r\nThis car is an acquired taste for Morganists. I think that someone will get a good deal, but they will still have to sort this one out. The handling of an individual example will differ according to changes the owner might have done -- stiffer/softer/adjustable shocks (stiffer is not necessarily better), \"decambering\" the front suspension, front/rear tire pressure differential, etc. but on a car with fairly stock suspension and using stock tire day-to-day pressures (22psi) my experience is that Morgans tend to understeer when cornered below a certain G-force, transitioning to a fairly neutral feel, and ultimately terminating in understeer (but lower tire pressure and stiffer shock settings, assuming one has adjustable shocks, in the back minimizes this feeling). This has to do with the use of rebound springs (mounted below the sliding axles and wrapped around the kingpins) to control body roll. Once the \"outside\" front suspension compresses enough to get the slider off the rebound spring the handling changes to neutral. Some people shorten the rebound spring, which should lower the speed at which the transition occurs (some people go as far as to shorten it enough to barely touch the sliding axle assembly at rest, which gives a softer ride -- seems counterintuitive but it's true -- at the expense of sharpness of handling).\n\nMy '52 race car had about 2.5\u02da of negative camber, as opposed to the stock positive 1\u02daof camber, and although the Hoosier Speedster radials wanted about 3.5\u02da I didn't want to go that far because bump steer increases as the base of the kingpins are moved outboard. Decambering (on road cars I've usually seen it modified to 0\u02da to 1\u02da negative) will increase grip during cornering, particularly on radials since the sidewalls are relatively flexible (racing with bias plies can be done with 0\u02da), but this added grip at the front increases understeer.\n\nI'll add that my '71 Plus 8 is really a gas to toss around in track conditions -- good turn-in, stable at speed, and easily steered with throttle. I don't have any great track video but here is a short one from an autocross at a Morgan gathering a few years ago. I didn't earn FTD but I did get fastest time for a Plus 8 and my wife earned fastest female driver in it against some experienced competition. My car has a decambered front end, cheapo Monroe shocks in front and a panhard rod and Konis in the rear, set one or two clicks from full soft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKieEyJnN3I\n\nMuch has been made of the rough ride, but that's truly overblown. That can be a symptom of bad shocks or simply overinflating the tires. I bumped the tires up to 26 psi for a drive with a car club, anticipating a long run on the highway, but when we got to back roads it got pretty harsh and I returned the pressures to 22psi as soon as I got home. When I bought the blue '57 Plus 4 in 2013 (auctioned here three years later) the ride was so bad nobody wanted to ride as passenger. The axle would crash down on the frame after passing over bumps in the road. I removed the rear lever shocks and found both very low on fluid. I will not leave anything alone... I have a set of double adjustables so that I can tailor the damping to that of the cheap Monroes... In addition, I have a set of bearings to go between the uprights and the springs, reducing the friction at that area, and perhaps giving a bit more feedback. \r\n\r\nThat said, the car actually handles pretty well on smooth roads. It tracks dead straight, and the steering doesn't offer up untoward shimmy or vibrations. Braking, with the recently installed cross head stays (personally installed in about 45 minutes), is perfectly straight, with good modulation. Steering is accurate, but currently a bit dead on center, but this may change with the change in front end alignment and the bearings. Otherwise, the chassis's perfect alignment and the antediluvian damper blades work perfectly. The steering and directional stability is quite good, and not fatigue inducing on long drives. While I have been careful with the car so far (I have only had it a few months) it has not put toothmarks on my heart. \r\n\r\nThe earlier cars have short final drive ratios, so you can yank the pants off a Corvette C6 on a freeway speed roll on if the guy is in 6th or (C7) 7th gear. Downshifting is not a requirement to pass an SUV or truck in short order. \r\n\r\nIf you have owned more sophisticated sports cars, the Morgan will feel a little crude. If you had an MG or Triumph, or an older Aston, the +8 will feel like a rocket ship. After all, in '68, it was about the quickest thing you could get in the UK, and would leave a bunch of US muscle cars as well. 0-60 in around 5 seconds (if you could shift the Moss quickly) and a nice V8 sound. It acts much as an equal length A Arm might, but not as compliant as the camber follows body roll. Set it up properly, and on smooth roads, the tires will be square with the pavement (other than the roll ,of course), and the car is solid and predictable. \r\n\r\nMine hops sideways on bumps, but the Panhard Rod should fix that. \r\n\r\nThis auction car is probably pretty good. Regardless of what others may say about it, my experience with \"restored\" cars is that they need sorting, and that requires DRIVING. Earlier cars had the higher compression 10.5:1 version of the 3.5 liter) and the Edelbrock intake and 4bbl. This one has split exhaust, but not the headers. In any case, the HP is certainly adequate for an exciting ride. The vehicle weight is probably less than 2100 lbs, so it is pretty quick, especially with the relatively short final drive and only 4 gears in the 'box. The engine number will list the compression ratio. There should be a picture of the engine number including the CR, but there doesn't seem to be one in the gallery. Morgan can give all the information on the car's build, original owner, engine, transmission, color and options for a small fee. \r\n\r\nWhile there are after market modifications for the Morgan's chassis, most owners do what the factory has done over the years: Tube rear damper conversion, Panhard rod and the Scuttle hoop, a roll hoop inside the scuttle to stiffen the chassis, steering bearings. Up front, cross head stays to stop the front suspension cross frame from twisting under braking (very effective). This one can take a 5 speed conversion without too much difficulty. \r\n\r\nSure, you can put an A-Arm front end on the car, but I am not really sure that that gets you, other than a non Morgan feel. Remember, the flexy flyer chassis is still there, and the leaf springs and the BCE (Before the Christian Era) steering box... \r\n\r\nYou can also get one of the Fink Chevy LS powered Morgans as well, with a heavily revised rear suspension and as much as 400 HP.
