There is some caulking of some type between some body panels which is not factory, but looks to have been done for aesthetics rather than repair. As Italclassic noted, the climate in Spain really seems to have preserved the car very well. I have found absolutely no evidence of rust or repair anywhere on the vehicle. The only rust is surface rust on a few screw heads that aren't stainless. The dash components were faded a nasty yellow color when we received the car, so we went ahead and had them painted to match the interior metal pieces. We also had the rims repainted to take care of some chipping that had occured there. @Micromotor, the car starts up every time and runs great! As several have noted, with only 18hp and in the mountains of North Carolina performance is nothing to write home about, but that's not the point of the car as others have also noted. The clutch works fine, the brakes work well, the suspension components are newer, probably replaced the same time it was repainted. Although I've already posted once, I'd just like to add that these cars were never meant to be collectibles and were therefore designed to meet the needs of rural roads in a postwar France. They didn't spray the undercarriages with any kind of rubber coating and there is very little rubber beeding between the fenders and body. Where they are prone to rust is the bulkhead (front footwell) and the rear panels behind the back seats where bolts are used to secure the seat belts. Given that this car spent most of its time away from snow and salt, chances are those two areas should be clean. As far as dependability, these cars are very simple and very reliable (except for the coil). I drove mine from Seattle to San Francisco after I had it worked on by a mechanic there. It drove like a champ although it really didn't like the grades. Keep in mind that this car will not do well on freeways because of the engine size!!! Having said that, as a daily driver around town, your gas mileage should be around 22 to 28 miles to the gallon. Very fun to drive but it does take some getting used to from the way it shifts to the way it tilts going around corners. It simply utilizes the air that is blown over the cylinders to cool the engine. The single control is a mechanical flap to divert the hot air into the cabin. No electric fan - the engine fan already takes care of that. There is no direct control of the temperature. I expected to be amused by the famous quirks of the 2CV driving experience, such as the legendary interior volume, the entire-roof sunroof, the suspension compliance which allows lean angles rumored to scrape the door handles on the tarmac. This is why I tracked down one to rent. But I had not anticipated the gaining insight into the thermodynamic properties of its air-cooled engine. If I remember correctly when I lifted off the throttle (it was generally wide open) the air from the heater suddenly became much, much hotter. Under acceleration or pulling up a hill, it cooled down. I'm not sure exactly why this is and would love to hear from an engineer. But I'll bet millions of French drivers are so familiar with this pattern that it would surprise them that it would surprise anyone. Even tho the body panels are essentially one sheet thick - i.e., not double-walled as is almost every other car ever made, the suspension is amazing. You should never have to do a wheel alignment unless you hit something, as there are NO rubber bushings in the suspension arms or steering linkages. Reason being, the suspension travel is stupendous. When I got my 3CV Truckette in Chicago, I could drive over freestanding 8 INCH thick railroad ties as tho they were minor bump strips, and that's with two people in the car. The car may look like a slightly styled garbage can, the suspension arms are mounted on tapered ROLLER BEARINGS instead of dirt cheap rubber. And they never require lube or maintenance and never get sloppy. The 2CV doesn't need 4WD to go offroad - just do it, and the car will accommodate you.
