Yes. They are the same car from the windshield/A-pillar back. The front fenders on these 2000c/cs models are not as rust inviting as the later e9 models. For both the e9s and the e120s (this one), the rockers are a vulnerability. There are actually 3 rockers (inner, middle, and outer). The heavy gauge middle rocker is essentially the backbone of the car with the A and B-pillar bases welded into it providing structural stability for the car. Water attacks the rockers from both road wash and debris as well as drainage for the rear window and dried rubber gaskets for the windshield and rear window (often unbeknownst to the owner). Quite often unsuspecting mechanics or owners will rest the rocker drain port on a lift or jack stand crushing it shut. Yes, Karmann engineered the rockers knowing they would get water that would need to drain out. They even built a condensation tube running upwards to the C-pillar roundel vent to release condensation build up (I guess in the winter months). Ironically, they only applied a light coat of primer in these hidden areas. As a result, rain water draining down (usually from the rear windows) backs up. Compounding this problem, the rear quarter panel overlaps the outer rocker tightly in this area. It is an inherent design flaw. This is a common area for rust. The problem is you can't see it because the stainless rocker trim completely covers everything. On the car I am restoring (66 2000 c), when I removed the rocker trim, chunks of rust fell out. I have had to replace most the middle rockers, the pillar bases, and all of the outer rockers. Rust can pretty much eat away that middle rocker as well as the pillar bases. This car looks exceptional. Alas, from lessons learned, I would really want to remove that stainless steel rocker trim (roughly 20 - 30 sheet metal screws) to really see the rocker area. If so, do you have pictures?\r\n\r\nDid you receive any documentation about this silver paint job? Was this a bare metal, glass out, base-coat, clear-coat catalyzed polyurethane job? Or, did they knock the green paint down with 500 grit paper and blow some generic enamel over the existing substrate? When you open the fuel door, is there any peeling paint that reveals green? If you pry up the rubber on the windscreens, do you find green, underneath?\r\n\r\nAlso, the bodywork around the front kidney grilles seems asymmetrical, as if front end damage was not carefully repaired. When the paint was removed, was there any evidence that the car had been repaired. Might you have pictures of the car in bare metal, passed on by the previous owner?\r\n\r\nAgain, I apologize if I ask redundant questions, but these cars are easy prey for the tin worm, and so documenting the rust repair seems prudent. And, asking questions about the extent of repair a necessary part of due diligence.\r\n\r\nForgive me if this question has been asked, but about the body badges, the hood and truck lid appear to be modern, plastic while the pillar emblems appear to be real cloisonn\u00e9. Is that correct? If so, do you have the original badges?\r\n\r\nThese four speed transmissions can become finicky about second gear, especially down, from third. Can you describe the gearbox behavior, cold and hot? How about the rear end? Any rumbling or howling?\r\n\r\nHave the seats been reupholstered, or are they original?\r\n\r\nIt is probable that this car has gone 171,000 Km, as stated in the description. Is the wear on the car consistent with a 100,000 mile car? Or, is there any thing that might lead you to believe the car has 271,000 Kms on it?\r\n\r\nYou replaced the top end, completely -- absolutely and completely! It must have been wasted! I worked in a BMW dealership from 1975-1990, on the line. In that time, I only saw heads replaced when they were cracked from overheating. And, when they overheat that bad, the pistons go oval and the bores are damaged. What about the bottom end? The silver paint, on the pan, suggests that engine was out. It used to be black. Given the dominoes that were falling, what stopped you from bearings, pistons and rings along with the necessary machine work? And, was the clutch pressure plate, driven disc, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing replaced? The radiator has new paint but, is noticeably absent from your list of new parts.\r\n\r\nI don't care much about serial numbers, but I do care about the integrity of the chassis and the reliability of the drive train. The previous owner had suffered a traumatic divorce and his personal life took a turn for the worse. Consequently he placed the car in long term storage along with a 3.0CS that he owned. When I came upon the 2000CS, it required attention and was a non-runner that was missing the head and several other mechanical components. Along with a thick layer of dust on the finish of the car, the brakes were entirely seized and the interior appeared dishevelled and missing some trim and parts. I have found a few pictures of the car on the day it was picked up (which I had sent my wife to reassure her), that I will upload directly. As well, the car was missing the stainless rocker trim which may have contributed to the solid condition of the rockers. \r\n\r\nThe owner having moved years ago, provided few records and details with the sale of the car which was sold as it sat. As a result, I am unable to offer any specific details of the paint and bodywork completed on the car prior to my ownership. My layman\u2019s understanding of the complexities of paint and body work limited the nature and extent of my inquiries about these matters. Concerning your questions about the factory paint color, I can attest that any remnants of the factory color appeared on the inside of the car during its refurbishment and that the paint around the fuel door has not peeled. The coverage of the paint in the trunk and engine bay appeared to be very comprehensive as I saw few traces of the original color there.\r\n\r\nThe refurbishment of the car did not start for several months after I purchased it as I had to arrange my finances first in order to undertake the refurbishment, and the process was spread out over time to accommodate the cost. \r\n\r\nWhen the refurbishment finally began, rust remediation was the primary focus. The driver and passenger floor boards had minor rust issues, the worst of it being a small hole in the passenger floor. Both floors were replaced and the rear floors were left unattended as they were in fine condition. The support rail on the passenger side was rusted and a new one was installed along with the fender supports. In an effort to mitigate future rust issues occurring, Wurth cavity wax was sprayed extensively throughout the entire car including rockers, support rails and anywhere the hose/wand could be inserted. \r\n\r\nOnce that stage was completed, the attention was turned toward the mechanical aspects of the car. As mentioned earlier the head was missing when I acquired the car and a new factory head was found and installed along with the numerous other items listed. Upon inspecting the engine, I was advised by the garage that the block and transmission were fine. When they removed the oil pan for cleaning and the installation of a new gasket, I asked them to refresh it at the same time. The radiator has been cleaned but is in the same condition as when I acquired the car.\r\n\r\nThe transmission shifts without issue and I do not detect any rumbling. Although the car retained some of its factory sound deadening material, I decided against using conventional butyl base material and elected to augment the factory material with Mass Load vinyl. This combination has successfully reduced the infiltration of road noise but still allowed access to the floor panels beneath.\r\n\r\nAs for your question regarding the body badges, both the badges for the trunk and hood were attached to the car when I acquired it. The pillar badges along with other missing parts, most notably the rocker trim were sourced and acquired over an extended period of time.\r\n\r\nBoth the front and the rear seats are in excellent condition and still have the factory material. The original front and rear interior door panels are in equally fine condition. The rear parcel shelf is lined with its original diamond pattern vinyl and remains in fine condition with the exception of sloppy repairs to several speaker wire holes which were larger than they should have been. The original headliner is devoid of any rips or tears and is fine condition with a natural patina cultivated over time. My car sold at the Bonhams Simeone Musium auction last year for $15000. But my car was no where as clean as this car. I think on a good day this car deserves a 30k price and on a bad day 25k. So I agree with the sellers reserve. I HOPE he will let us know what price he finaly sells it for so we can have a better reference.\r\nThe 2000 is a great car and it attracted more attention than any vintage car I ever had and I've had a few.
