You had to sit really carefully in the driver's seat to avoid the spring sticking up or it could be very unpleasant. \r\n\r\nIt only had two hubcaps - I put them on the same side. There was a big dent in one of the front doors. Someone had slathered bondo all over it and it looked like someone had been sick out the window. \r\n\r\nThe headlights worked sometimes. I drove it home once down a country road with no front lights. The road was illuminated only by one of the front turn signal lights. I spent a good amount of time using emery cloth to polish the brass bits that held the fuses in place. Its electrics finally gave out altogether returning to school for finals. Of course he was speaking out of turn - and told to be quiet.\r\n\r\nIn 1964 sure enough, the car hardly sold at all on the home market. So because he had criticized the styling - He, Mr. Matsuo was picked to make the changes needed to improve sales. Mr. Matsuo made minor styling changes but proposed the car really needed a new \u201cCharacter\u201d or \"Image\" to make it interesting to younger people.\r\n\r\nThus the \u201chigh performance\u201d Bluebird 411 SS and SSS models were introduced resulting in a significant increase in sales.!! Sales were further boosted in 1966 by a Class Win at the 14th East African Safari Rally in 1966.\r\n\r\nBecause of the successful turn-around in sales, Mr. Matsuo was put in charge of the Sports Car Styling Studio in 1965. It had a piece cut out of the inner fender panel in the same location as that shown in pics #227/228 for access to the charging valves on the old 2-cyl. York compressor that nearly stopped the 1.6L engine when engaged. It had a little plastic panel over the hole that was held in by 2 sheet metal screws from the wheel-well side. With the car on the ground, access was much easier with that wheel/tire removed.
