I always turned my own wrenches and owned a '56 300SL Gullwing and a '63 300SL Roadster at the same time, both in DB534 red, my favorite red of all time. The red on this BMW seems a bit \"off\" to my 83 year old eyes.\r\n\r\nI was told by a trusted source that the German companies didn't like to deliver their roadsters with a hard top the same color as the body because they expected the hard tops would be stored out of the weather in summer and the paint would not keep the same color as the main body of the car.\r\n\r\nMy Gullwing had Rudge knock-off wheels that had a factory finish of a gray/silver enamel that was likely baked on to the alloy rim riveted to the steel center of the wheel. My late Roadster I believe had body color wheels with hub caps. I think this BMW would look better with wheels painted in gray or a muted silver. This would be a rather easy change. \r\n\r\nThe only BMW 507 that I ever remember being around for any length of time was in the University of Miami dorm parking lot about 1961. The car sat there in the South Florida weather for the year. Occasionally the driver would start the engine and it would make wonderful sounds. \r\n\r\nThe pictures seem to clearly show that this car has had an amazing, authentic, restoration. I can't imagine the number of man hours and materials that went into creating this beautiful presentation. I do not know this car's owner or the selling dealer. Feather White is a creamy white with definite beige tones to it. The late owner (of the Elvis 507) insisted that that car was returned to its original color scheme for its ground up restoration by BMW Classic. Same was true for the sister car I now own.\r\n\r\nRudge wheels would have a chrome outer rim with the center hub being body color. So these wheels look incorrect to me. That doesn't mean this style never existed from the factory, just that my extensive photo library of 507's doesn't seem to back that up.\r\n\r\nJust my opinion, but I think the 507 is probably the best designed convertible/hardtop car ever made. It's easy to think that the hardtop is fixed the way it is so incredibly well incorporated into the design. I never take mine off! Most convertibles with a hardtop look like the hardtop was an afterthought...like the Z8 (which I also own...and never have the top on).\r\n\r\nMore 507's have come to the public market thus far this year than in any of the past 10+ years. I 1968, I bought another one (70186) and owned it until 1988, along with a 503.\n\nWhen I picked up the my 507 outside of Chicago, I drove it back to NYC. Several months later, I met Count Albrecht Goertz and took him for a ride (he actually cried, as I remember). I told him how I planned to replace the exhaust with a modern one and the two tone seats (black/white) and he encouraged me not to do either. The 503 was stolen by the restorer who closed up shop in the middle of the night and disappeared with my car. I still have the engine and transmission.\n\nBack to the Tommy Charles story. He later sold the car to another US buyer who sold it to BMW for its restoration by BMW Classic and showing at Pebble Beach, maybe in 2014-2016, I visited the gentleman in Germany (Hans Landzettal) who had purchased the NOS from BMW. He later sold the necessary parts back to BMW for the restoration of the car that I could have bought for $5,000.\n\nI now have another fully restored 503 which you may see on BaT in the not too distant future.
