Even the Museum of Modern Art in NYC settled for a later model, without the space age Bertoni dashboard.\r\n\r\nGooding sold a rougher but more original example at Amelia this year for an absurdly low price, after getting $100k for an extremely original US model at Pebble Beach in 2023, and $193k for a theatrically mis-restored example in 2018. Earlier this month Aguttes obtained \u20ac48 for a nice example. Build dates before May 1957 are Mille Miglia eligible and these are fantastically comfortable and capable event cars, but prices are all over the place.\r\n\r\nThe exterior mirror on this one is magnificent, wish I knew where to find one. The correct windshield washer reservoir rightly deserves its own photo. But someone went a bit crazy with black paint in the interior. His son still drives it. Probably has 300k miles on it by now. I easily put a hundred on it and the odo has turned over once.\r\n\r\nThese early cars are not for amateurs. I've owned 11 Ds, and they really didn't get everything nailed down and stable until 1964. The early ones are fine but you really need to know what you're doing and have some experience. This should definitely not be your first DS.\r\n\r\nI'm doing a 65 wagon right now. And my interior is similar, but smaller pattern and in blue. Obviously it's an ID19F.\r\n\r\nGood luck. The car isn't perfect. But enough has been done. It is not an ID 19 but a full DS 19 with all the power steering, brakes and 5 speed trans. Later cars are actually more complex, although earlier cars are more fault-prone. The cars evolved rapidly from 1956 to 58, so it can be difficult to determine what is correct for a particular build month. So few early cars have survived, detailed knowledge is scarce, but documentation is readily accessible on the web and there is an excellent and very supportive forum at GroupsIO. In many ways these are otherwise very simple cars.\r\n\r\nThere are good parts suppliers in the US and of course more in Europe. These were high volume cars so even NOS parts can often be found, but parts specific to certain build months of the early cars require more creativity.\r\n\r\nThis car is still on LHS (red) fluid, which is hygroscopic and a great paint remover, so more care is required.\r\n\r\nIf you are like me and tend to substitute money for personal mechanical competence, the complexity makes servicing these cars expensive. Engine bay could get super hot, which boiled the LHS which unfortunately turns acidic and causes problems. \r\nThe early clockwork front discs are an odd design and a little difficult to fathom for the unfamiliar. \r\nEarly Michelin X Radials are produced every now and then and can sometimes be difficult to source if stocks are low. \r\nThe early 3 bearing engines are definitely rougher than the late 5 bearing ones. \r\nEarly plastic and fibreglass trim was bit of a new novelty in the Fifties and can be very fragile now. Hopefully the right guy comes along.", "likes": 0, "timestamp": 1743812703, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 17275780, "authorName": "Frenchbuff", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/frenchbuff/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "DSSuper, to add to your comments re the early cars, my father started me on this ongoing Citroen trip in '62 by bringing home a '58 DS19 with 22K orig. miles on it - traded in at a Salt Lake Studebaker dealer - with clear vinyl still on all the seat covers, but had a broken diff. \u00a0Seems the lady owner didn't know how to gently handle the Citromatic lever -which I claim is the FIRST paddle shifter used on a production car - anyone differ??\u00a0 Dad bought a C & P set from the NJ Cit dealer and the Studebaker guys were able to install it and it worked very well thru the car's life.\u00a0\u00a0\r\nYes the cars thru maybe '61 were quite different, with a quirky, tricky to adjust clutch control on the carb, and both a high and low pressure hydraulic systems - the low one being part of the waterpump which powered the gearshift. \u00a0\r\n\r\nIn 2019 I towed home what I call a very early prototype - VIN 10650 - meaning it was ordered during the first day of the Paris show introduction. \u00a0It's all white, and that's the color of the very early cars. \u00a0A date stamped on the back of the speedo cluster is Nov. '56, and the single page in the exquisitely technically illustrated first manuals shows details that match this car perfectly for 1956 cars - first full year of production. \u00a0I bought it in '08 during the crash off Fleabay - from a budding mechanic in Havre Montana - who had rescued it from becoming landfill in a ravine along with two later DSs and 5 Mazda rotaries. \u00a0Original key was in the ignition, and the kid mechanic posted a video showing it jacking itself up and running erratically!\u00a0 It towed perfectly on my car dolly for 1400 miles with nothing but urethane rods in all the suspension cylinders to absorb shock - zero damage to the car - a trick I learned about 40 yrs ago.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n\r\nThe reason I bought it was I wanted to see what problems Citroen encountered during the launch and what they changed and how. \u00a0Sure enough, this car is very enlightening - Most significant was that the HCs had no damping discs internally! \u00a0The car tends to bob up & down at times. \u00a0Another major change was the door steel window channels are straight, felt lined, and\u00a0 have no inward jog at the last inch of travel. \u00a0The jog was added to force the glass against the top seal strongly enough to prevent the windows whistling from being sucked outward at top by the lower air pressure along the sides while in motion. \u00a0Another one: \u00a0The rubber sockets at rear of front fenders are mounted on triangular plates carrying the rubber liner sockets and attached with about a dozen nuts & bolts so the sockets could be moved in X and Y to get best fit to the door pillar prongs to produce a nice fit to the leading door edges. \u00a0Later the sockets were integrated into the now ubiquitous \"thimble\" welded to the fender rear with only a single center bolt allowing a minimal adjustability in X and Y. \u00a0That change eliminated a pile of parts per fender! \u00a0One interesting change on this car was using a standard small tincan starter solenoid attached to the battery bracket - of the shape and size still used today in myriad battery installations. \u00a0The original Citroen solenoid with nylon cover which was introduced in '57 is totally unique in the industry. \u00a0\r\n\r\nAnd re the original inboard disc brakes - yes they are a very complicated design, featuring automatic adjusting of the mechanical parking brake system integrated in the calipers. \u00a0Their complexity can make them very difficult to rehab on a car which has sat for years, as all the bits of steel and aluminum can corrode together. \u00a0Getting then out and apart can be very difficult, but over my 60+ yrs I've learned that several fairly simiple things can be done to make them more reliable and prevent seizeup when they're left sitting for long periods of time. \u00a0No complex machining is required. \u00a0If anyone is in need of freeing up their early calipers and/or overhauling them, feel free to contact me thru BAT and I'll explain the fixes and reasons behind them. \u00a0My car is very rough inside as the interior is shot, but amazingly rustfree - two holes in the floorpan where driver and front passenger feet rested are the only ones worth mentioning - seems Havre gets only 2 inches of rain/yr and no salt is used!!", "likes": 0, "timestamp": 1743831609, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 17280028, "authorName": "DSsuper", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/dssuper/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "@Frenchbuff\r\nVery interesting.
