As cool as this car is as a 4th of July ride in its current livery, let's look through the stars-and-stripes motiv and visualize it without the cougar head, painted in a period 1950s Volkswagen color again. You'll end up with a 1953/'54 steel-bodied special, that thanks to its featherweight is as much fun to drive as an early Lotus 7. But who knows the last time the link or king pins have been changed. Now for the damage metal behind the kitty's head, it was rather nasty looking, I'm assuming that the metal may be rusted out Sheet metal work can be pricey unless you can do it yourself. What I would look into doing is cutting the rust out, making a shallow pocket with a round pot or pan, check the kitchen. This can be pop riveted, glued with one of the body panel adhesives now available. If you have the means, it could be welded in. I would probably go for the rivets and glue for sealing it. Now in this pocket, you could install a 9 inch or smaller driving light. The engine is a 67 and it has what looks like a 12 volt generator on it so I'm assuming (that word has caused me much trouble through out the years) that she has a 12 volt system. A 6 volt driving light might be difficult to find.
