A 2007 inspection of the car indicated there was no significant visible wood rot in the areas that could be seen (at that time, the car was disassembled). According to the current owner, during the restoration process small portions of the wood were replaced. \n\nOf interest regarding the original panels, the serial number on the hood indicates it is the original to the car. \n\nThe sag in the door is not attributed to the door construction itself. To remedy this, a re-shimming is required. This process can be performed with a set of jacks and a level to adjust the gap in the door and body. UK MG experts advise the process consists of removing the doors, level checking the chassis, and then sliding in shims and testing closures until the optimum closures are achieved. This same process was done at the factory but often times, body-off restorations miss this aspect and discard the needed shims. While it sounds a detailed process, it is achievable with the right methods and a documented aspect of ash frame body construction from this era which club members and vintage MG experts are familiar with. \n\n@MRoadster the trafficators, when extended, sometimes are sticky, but can be gently encouraged out. The trafficators are original (not restored with the later MG types which are a half an inch shorter). They are very rare survivor pieces - especially the celluloid. This aspect of the restoration is documented in the files. \r\n\r\nThe woodwork on this car is very original. The sagging was a problem from new - MG solved this by redesigning the new model NB to hinge from the front using long (Art Deco style) hinges - but still was not 100% successful. The shimming process can be performed thoughtfully and should solve the problem. British manufacturing was in grave trouble, with the automobile industry no exception. Until the mid '30s they had somehow held on, due partly to the increasing number of buyers created by the growth of the middle class. At that point, the export market was not a substantial factor in production numbers.\n\nThe Great Depression caught up with Everyone at some point. Lord Nuffield worked very hard to keep auto makers from going under. It was his 'rationalization' program that shoved MG's 18th century coach making tradition, the hand-made approach to building automobiles, into 20th century production mode. \n\nThis took place in 1935, the year after the NA was released; thus the model's production run of 1935-36 spanned the Nuffield transition. Approximately 220 open cars were produced. More would likely have been made, but it was an expensive car and the Depression was at its height.\n\nAnd sporting cars were among the period's casualties. Demand for Singer's successful Nine Sports and Le Mans models, for example, fell off during these same years, and they were better built, at a substantially advantageous price point over the MG. \n\nIt's not a perfect comparison because the NAs, with their 1,271cc engines, were more powerful cars. Not only is the history of this car very well documented in the numerous files and period letters, documents, and notations that accompany the car, the chain of ownership is well-know, especially in the early years including the delivery of it to the US and eventually to California:\n\nAccording to copies of factory documents accompanying the car, chassis #NA0613 was delivered December 31, 1934 finished in red with a red interior and aluminum colored wire wheels . On January 1, 1935 the internal MG Records Office recorded the following \u201cnon-standard\u201d items fitted to the car:\n \n637 Malcolm Campbell Steering Wheel\n642 8 Day Clock\n645 Radiator Thermometer\n674 Headlamp Stoneguards\n \nThe car was delivered to the UK selling agent J. Cockshoot & Co. but suffered a breakdown while in transit due to a faulty magneto (documented with hand-written correspondence). With repairs completed, the car was delivered to the first owner, Stewart Kay-Menzies (living at Roylelands House, Rochdale, UK) who took delivery of the car in February 1935 and licensed the car with a Rochdale license plate DK 9748 (a display version of which it wears today in honor of this first issued plate). \n\nAccording to written correspondences recalling the history of the car from family members, in May of 1935 the owner emigrated with his family to the US taking the car to NY aboard the Queen Mary. Upon arrival in New York, the car was driven across the country to Beverly Hills CA where it remained in use, including registration and title in the US. It's quite remarkable to consider this 3,000 mile trip at a time when fueling stations were infrequent, food by roadside rare, and mechanical assistance infrequent at best. Never the less, the journey was completed and the car arrived at its eventual long term home. \n\nIn the late 1930\u2019s the car was either bought or leased by Pacific Autos, a business entity that supplied cars to then prospering Hollywood film studios. As noted in other posts, the car appeared in the 1938 motion picture \u201cBulldog Drummond in Africa\u201d and in Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s 1941 movie \u201cSuspicion\u201d. \n\nEventually the car became the property of Spencer Varian, a Hollywood gadabout in need of attention, who had the car painted white with a green bonnet (photo in documentation) and the interior reupholstered in a material with faux zebra print. The next owner was Sigmund Caswell, a well-known L.A. CA, collector of high-profile pre war classics. Caswell placed the car on a California DMV certificate of non-operation in 1958.
