This changes the character of the car, giving it 5 useful gears. It is like having another 10 HP. \r\n\r\nAs I have built 6 of these, all with 15\" wheels and Dunlop vintage race tires, I can add a few solutions for this particular car. \r\n\r\nHopefully, the front tires are 4.50X15, and the rears are 5.00X15. If so, there should not be any rubbing problems in the rear, provided the correct rear backside space is in the rear wheels. I believe that this particular car has a wire wheel rear axle, which would be an inch harrower than a disc wheel axle. But I would be surprised if the rubbing was against the chassis. One possibility is that it is rubbing inside the rear wheel arch housing, at the very backside, beneath the bodywork, or with the rear wheel housings, which should be discarded, or trimmed away. I discard them, as they get in the way of servicing the rear suspension arms, which will need the mentalistic bushes replaced often. There is a fix for this as well, using the Proflex 4 piece urethane bushings, which will last much, much longer. \r\nThe rubbing in the front could be fixed with steering rack stops, which I ignore. These are usually made from a cut section of PVC pipe, and I just don't install them. The tires will rub at full lock, so best not to really go to full lock. I have been using that technique for more than 17 years. I have not done any damage.\r\n\r\nQuick note: They forgot to drill and tap the anti sway bar blocks for a grease fitting. Easy enough. 'Takes about 20 minutes to do both, Then, it won't take more than 20 minutes to grease the anti sway bar blocks. just squirt... No big deal. Everyone forgets to do this. \r\nThe metalistics can be made to last longer but it requires running the suspension pivots at a very low torque. If you buy the car, feel free to contact me about suspension setup on these. The best setup is to at least run a set of the Proflex bushings (which are now available from Westfield's spares department. to fit both front and rear suspension. \r\nWhatever you do, don't install rod ends on the trailing arms (been there done that) as the equal length 4 link will bind and the handling will deteriorate. The 4 link will need a bit of compliance to give proper chassis response. You can use rod ends on both ends of the Panhard Rod, which in this case has been rendered in alloy with rod ends. That's perfectly OK. \r\n\r\nThe radiator seems to be very large, which is good. The steering rack seems to be the quick ratio \"fat rack\". I have an oil cooler on mine, as I do long tours, and I like to move along. While I don't know which axle ratio is in this car, with the wheel and tires, and the 5th gear, I imagine that 80 mph occurs at around 3700 RPM, or less if it has a 3.9 or 3.7. Very nice for the longer tours that you might not want to do at 55 mph. Also, the thing is amazingly stable (if properly set up), and is just about impervious to cross winds, as it has a very low cross section. \r\n\r\nIf it doesn't have a clutch type LSD, such as a TranX or 3J, you might want to install one. You can use the original ring gear. It does amazing things when you want to accelerate off a corner. Don't forget to order the race rear axles if it doesn't already have them. MED Engineering has them. If you don't change the axles, the torque from that 1360 will twist them in half, breaking at the spline end at the diff, or spin off the torque plate at the wheel. \r\nIf you don't have an LSD, well, the wheels will just spin and you won't accelerate off the corner as you might like, but the axle probably won't fail right away. \r\n\r\nNow, about your wobbly web dreams. There are no wobbly webs available for this car at the moment. However, Image Wheels in the UK has offered to make some, with a spridget bolt pattern, in 15\", any backside/offset, provided 5 sets are ordered at about $1200/set. The wheels don't have to be identical in measurement, as the center is the part that we would be paying for. So far, I have had this offer up for more than 3 years, and no takers. \r\nI suggest 15X5 front (standard spridget 5\" wheel width backside spacing +.25\", and 15X6 in the rear, backside spacing depending on your rear axle type and track dimension preference.\r\nYou can increase the rear track by about an inch, depending. There is plenty of room in the body to center up the wider 5.00X15 Dunlop cross ply vintage race tires. \r\nI would love to have a 1.5 liter Godiva, but, you know... cost. Besides, I can get just about as much power from a 1380 spridget, and still hit 60 in about 6 seconds. That's about as quick as a '57 injected Vette. \r\nAs for the first builders \"limitations\", well... I believe that he was a noted Indy car designer and engineer. He became very ill, and could not finish the project as he had imagined. it was ordered without the chassis bulkheads installed. \r\nWith the limited miles on this one, I suspect that there will be some additional development to do, but the builders actually know how to put a race car together, so I imagine that it will be enjoyable from the get-go. \r\n\r\nProperly set up, these Westfield 11s steer with great precision, and with the bias ply Dunlops, can be drifted at will, and throttle steered, at sane speeds. They are small, so your single lane becomes race track wide and the immediacy of the throttle response should be quite invigorating. The ride is actually pretty good, provided it is not set too low, and installing premium dampers such as Protech double adjustables of the longer length used on the early cars, will greatly improve ride and handling. \r\nLook, a lot of people buy these cars thinking that they are something else other than a '50s sport racer. In the end, they don't get driven much, except by guys who have properly setup cars. This one is exceptional in that it appears to be nicely assembled, and has unlimited potential. Hopefully, the person who buys it will be knowledgable enough to get the best from it. You have to drive it to make your corrections and improvements. \r\nI have had mine for nearly two decades now, and while it doesn't look as nice as this one, it is mechanically perfect, and never ceases to bring a smile to my face. I have learned much from owning it, and it led me to the building of several others for friends. \r\nOne last thing: Licensing in CA is easy under SB100 rules. You will need to fill out the proper paperwork, and do the inspections in order. There is no emissions testing required, and none will be done at the BAR, which you will have to visit for your 'Exempt\" sticker. Since it is already licensed, you probably won't have to do the headlight/brake inspection. \r\nGood luck with the bidding. In my opinion, and of those who have built and enjoyed kit cars, the building component is as much, or more, of the ownership enjoyment experience as the driving component. The Westfield XI is a well-developed and proven kit, but it leaves much up to the builder/owner to complete to their own desired level of specification, appearance and function. By my own personal definition, a kit car is never truly \u201ccomplete\u201d - it is an ongoing work in progress - and, at least to me, that\u2019s the beauty and joy of owning such a car. I have personally built several small class formula racing cars - FF, FVee & FAtlantic (you can see the Chevron B29 I rebuilt and sold on BaT here: https://bringatrailer.com/2011/05/11/bat-exclusive-insiders-1975-chevron-b29-faf2/) and the Eleven is very similar. Those race cars require on-going attention - you can\u2019t just run them hard and then park them until the next race weekend. While nearly complete, the car does have a few remaining details that need to be taken care of - most of which could be done over a weekend:\r\n\r\n\u2022 The car has been set up using the string and carpenter tools method, but should be placed on a set-up pad, aligned and weight balance checked\r\n\u2022 The door mounted rearview mirrors need a pair of hard rubber or Delrin spacers to set them at the ideal viewing angle. You can take it to the alignment shop as well, but be prepared to sit in the car during the measurements and adjustments. It's important. I know... Hard to do adjustments when sitting in the car. So, get some weights from Dick's and use your real weight. The car knows... And... The first time, you might need a saw and a thread die along with the wrenches. \nCommon problems: \nSensitive steering or steering that does't have much caster return, and the wheel not centered: This is caused by improper cutting of the rack tie rods and rod ends. Most don't do this last, when the driver is in the seat, and the chassis corner weights are set, along with the ride height. This is always problematic because this is a light car, and sitting in it compresses the suspension, and that changes the static settings of the toe and camber. The toe goes way OUT. Chassis setup needs to be done with the driver in the car, or the driver's weight in the seat. Especially the toe setting. Again, properly set up, the chassis is very stable, and comfortable at speeds over 100 mph. The steering is quick, light and accurate. \nTires rubbing the headlight buckets: First, the right sized tires have to be fitted up front when using the 15\" wheels. 4.50X15 Dunlop vintage race tires are the proper setup up front. YOU CAN'T go larger. Then, the plastic back side covers may have to be discarded. Every fraction of an inch counts. That said, I didn't have any problems with this on the later bodies, as this car has. Also, this clearance is sensitive to ride height. In any case, I have never had a problem with this on any of the cars I have set up with the vintage race Dunlops, and the correct wheel backside space. \nLastly, the old metalistic rubber/metal bushings should not be torqued down. They should be aloud to rotate about the suspension bolt. I recommend very low torque, as any torque on the thin rubber of the bushing will shear it, and then, the suspension doesn't work. Failure can occur as quickly as 10 miles, but if not torqued down (5~7 lbft only), using fresh nylocks or castle nut and a cotter pin, they will last a very long time. The other solution is the Proflex bushings, which allow torquing of the bushing, and full rotation, along with better compliance, especially for the rear suspension. \nYou might change the links for the front anti sway bar to LH and RH threads so that the links can be adjusted in situ. This is especially important when setting the ride height with the driver in the car. You need to set everything so that with the driver in the car, there is no preload. Having the ability to just turn the turnbuckle to set the bar preload will have an hour or so in the chassis setup. \nI have not done any cars on the mini lites (other than my own on 13\" with 185/70 tires). For this car, The rubbing problem in the rear can be fixed by using the current front wheel size in the rear (with the 5.00 tires), or tossing the whole thing for a set of wire wheels in 5\" front and 5.5 or 6\" width rear. Note that the 4.50 and the 5.00 tires will work fine on 5\" front and 5.5\" rear wheels. Recommended widths, in fact. I use an 5\" width MG 72 spoke application wire wheel on the standard Midget spline hub in front and a 5.5\" Triumph TR250 center laced rim in the rear to get a little more track width, center the tire in the body, and leave plenty of room to clear the suspension. Perfect fit. And, it looks pretty cool. As the car is now, spacers should be fitted if you want to use the mini lites, order another pair of fronts for the rear, or you can call up Image Wheels and order a D-Type Dunlop replica, or by 5 sets of wobbly, or those cool silverstone 8 spoke wheels in your favorite backside spacing and width. You can even get spline centers and knock offs. \nRide and handling issues: Again, chassis setup. The front chassis ride height should be around 5.5\" with the driver in the car. Rear should be around 7.5\" depending on which dampers are installed. I recommend the longer dampers from the earlier version of the W11. The chassis are identical, so everything will fit, but there will be more suspension travel. \nSet up the chassis about 1/2~3/4\" higher on the driver's side static, empty. With the driver in the car, the chassis should be level side to side, with the correct ride heights front and rear. Also, corner weights will be respectably close with, if you are lucky, zero wedge. The thing is a bit narrow, so trying to get L/R cross weights is a fool's errand, but you can get 50% diagonal weight (zero wedge), and that will give identical left/right steering response and skidpad numbers. Get this right, and a single click on the rear dampers will change the handling from dead neutral to slightly oversteering for the autoX course. \nPoor or inaccurate brake feel: This is an easy one. Install TAPER WHEEL BEARINGS. Speedwell Engineering in California has them, with the proper shims for the correct torque. This will fix any problems with the brake feel. I chased this for a couple of years before I finally figured it out, and bought the parts. \n\nThe carburetor: Well, depends on what engine setup you have. I have a jet solution for the DCOE 45, on a 5~6\" intake, using the Longman race head, SPVP3 cam and 10.5:1 compression. It seems to work well on all of the engines I have built ('cause they are all the same). The engine builder, having some dyno time on the engine that they built should have a jet solution as well. \n\nWhile the guys who built this car were beyond competent, there is always some development to be done, especially if it is the first. The above is just part of what I have learned in sorting a few of these, along with my own. \nFigure on driving it at least 2000 miles to get it sorted. Maybe less if you know how to get what you want out of it. \n\nI have done a bunch of these, and I have over 50K miles on my own. I am embarrassed to say that I have not done anything to mine in a few years, other than drive it, check the tightness of the suspension bolts and the fluid levels and handle any disposables, such as hoses, master cylinders or rear wheel cylinders, periodically, as one would any car. Easy stuff to do. I am no longer involved in development, though I would like to change some of the older components with improved units that I have installed on the other cars I have built. \n\nThese are really good machines, and drive much as the originals did, when put on the same tires, as this one is. They can handle more power, and can really fly off of a corner with the LSD installed putting all the power to the ground without inside wheel spin. \n\nThere is a US distributor, who has been responsive for more than a decade, and the factory has parts that get here in a reasonable time. The kit consists of 9\" rotors, calipers with properly sized pistons for balanced braking, mounting brackets, rear hub bearings, e-brake hardware, etc. It is a comprehensive kit for Spridget installation. However, it was not a direct install on the Westfield. As Jan noted earlier in this thread, DWR's fabricator, Dan, used his skills to get a very nice fit that Jan and others have picked up on since. If you compare the photos on the Ol Phartz Parts website to those of the assembled kit on the Westfield you'll note custom hose brackets, shaped e-brake rods, etc. What finished the installation especially nicely was Dan's work on the cockpit mounted e-brake handle/lever. The lever is a Spridget part that because of its design requires mounting on the left side of the center tunnel. Of course, with a LHD car, that puts the lever right against the driver's thigh. The cars I have built (early chassis and late chassis) all had the hand brake on the left hand side. That includes the RHD chassis I built. I think that the mounting of the handbrake really depends on where the handbrake lever was acquired, or if the mount plate was fabricated. The builders of this car were quite capable of the fabrication required to reverse the hand brake unit for RH mounting. \r\n\r\nFYI: The \"real\" Lotus 11, and the later \"7\" had the hand brake lever mounted up under the dash, on its side, on the passenger (LH) side of the car. My early Series 1 Lotus 7 (essentially the same chassis as the earlier 11) had an under dash handbrake. \r\n\r\nI believe that the fellow who runs Old Phartz Parts has the modified caliper mounts for the Spridget rear disc setup, or they can be redrilled to re clock the calipers. There are a few other small modifications to clear the suspension arms, but these are easily figured out and completed. The setup can be used with the disc wheels, or the wire wheels. Just specify which setup you are using when you order the kit from Old Phartz. BTW, it's a pretty nice kit. I was consulting on another build where this setup was installed. I don't recall any problems or frustrations with the installation. The kit works well with the supplied tandem master cylinder that came with the Westfield kit. \r\n\r\n@Carhillclimb: About the chassis setup. If you put the weight in the driver's seat to do the ride height, corner weights and alignment (camber and toe), you won't have to do any bump steer adjustment. In simple terms, bump steer (on this chassis) is really dependent on the initial setting of the ride height, along with proper placement of the steering rack (the rack is in the right place). The factory got this right. Stick to the design ride height. It is perfect. Bump steer is not a problem. You don't have to waste your time on this (and you can really waste time on this... Trust me...better to be driving). Drive the car with the correct ride height, camber and toe, and you will feel the truth. There are three areas of rub: a) the inner rears rub on the trailing arm attachment brackets. The solution is to install 1/2\" longer wheel studs (4 on each disc hat) and place the included spacer between the disc hat and the wheel. Solved. b) the fronts rub on the inner fenders (which are part of the hood) when turned to an aggressive lock. This is inherent with all Elevens due to the way the fenders cover much of the front wheels. The solutions are 1) do nothing, you'll get used to the turning radius the car is capable of and will relax the your turn when you hear the slight rub or 2) install and appropriate length of PVC pipe over the steering links that will limit the amount travel - not very hi-tech, but it works. c) the fronts rub on the backside of the plastic headlight buckets. Solution, remove and discard the plastic buckets as Westfield recommends - done. The DWR guys and I did not like this solution, as it leaves the backside of the headlights exposed to road grime, so we left the buckets in place and until we fully understood the amount/depth of rub. I have shown this issue in earlier posts/photos. What I feel is a more ideal solution is to cut out the area of contact (which is conical in shape) and replace it with a flat piece of aluminum, fiberglass or plastic sheet -done.\r\n\r\nMaybe I am completely wrong, but I feel that the car being mostly complete (not 100%) would be a plus or an attraction, not a negative or point of concern. Completing these checklist items will cause the new owner to become familiar with the car and give him/her a true sense of being part of the Westfield build experience. Maybe that sounds corny. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Westfield is a car the desires attention and the ideal new owner will be someone who likes to tinker, improve and become very familiar with their car. The car is so simple and easy to work on - when the hood and tail are completely removed, it is like a motorcycle in providing open and clear access to all critical areas - that it just begs fettling.
